Whitbread traces its origins to Samuel Whitbread’s 1742 partnership and began as a brewery. It diversified into hospitality, opened its first Travel Inn in 1987, sold its brewery business in 2000, and sold Costa Coffee to Coca-Cola in 2019. The company is now focused primarily on hotels.

Whitbread owns and operates Premier Inn and hub by Premier Inn. Its estate spans the UK, Ireland and Germany, with Premier Inn positioned around consistent, affordable accommodation and hub offering a more compact, digitally enabled city-centre format.

The firm is especially strong in vertically integrated hotel operations: it controls brand, distribution, hotel operations and much of its property strategy rather than relying mainly on franchising. Premier Inn holds a 12% share of UK hotel rooms, while Whitbread is expanding in Germany and using technology, standardisation and scale to improve returns.
