Founded in 1973 by Wm. Polk Carey, W. P. Carey began by pioneering pooled investments in net-leased commercial real estate. It is now a publicly traded real estate investment trust headquartered in New York, with additional offices in Dallas, London, and Amsterdam.

The company acquires and owns operationally critical, single-tenant commercial properties, primarily industrial, warehouse, and retail assets. Its leases are generally long term and include contractual rent escalations; the company completed its exit from office assets in 2024.

W. P. Carey is particularly strong in sale-leasebacks and diversified net-lease investing. Its portfolio spans multiple countries, tenants, industries, and property types, giving students exposure to real estate acquisitions, asset management, capital markets, portfolio strategy, and transaction execution.
