Visa traces its history to 1958, when Bank of America launched the BankAmericard program. Regional Visa businesses were consolidated into Visa Inc. in 2007, and the company went public in 2008. It is headquartered in San Francisco and operates across more than 200 countries and territories.

Visa provides payment-network services including authorization, clearing and settlement, alongside fraud prevention, security, data, consulting and other value-added services. Banks and other financial institutions issue Visa-branded cards; Visa itself does not issue cards, extend credit or set cardholder rates and fees.

Its core strength is the scale, reliability and reach of VisaNet, particularly in transaction processing and cross-border payments. In fiscal 2025, Visa processed 257.5 billion transactions and recorded $14.2 trillion in payments volume, while generating $40.0 billion in net revenue.
