About Transport for London
Transport for London was formed on 3 July 2000 and became responsible for the Underground in 2003. It operates as the integrated transport authority for Greater London, reporting to the Mayor's transport strategy and managing more than 25,000 employees.
TfL runs or oversees the capital's major transport modes, including the Underground, buses, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, Elizabeth line, trams, river services and key roads. It also manages payment and journey-information systems such as Oyster, contactless travel and TfL Go.
Its strongest areas are large-scale transport operations, multimodal network planning and infrastructure renewal. The organisation combines day-to-day service delivery with major programmes including Tube upgrades, zero-emission bus deployment, road-safety schemes and continued development of the Elizabeth line and other rail services.
