Highlights
About SmartestEnergy
SmartestEnergy began in the UK in 2001 as an aggregator of independent generation projects and later expanded into business electricity supply. It is wholly owned by Japanese trading group Marubeni and now operates across the UK, US and Australia, with further international expansion through its 2026 acquisition of Spain’s Factor Energia.
The firm connects independent renewable generators with commercial and industrial energy customers. Its activities span power purchasing, wholesale trading, corporate PPAs, renewable certificates, flexible and fixed energy contracts, route-to-market services, and energy risk management. It does not own generation assets itself; instead, it works with more than 400 UK generators.
SmartestEnergy is especially strong in renewable power procurement and energy-market intermediation. Its careers materials point to roles in trading and origination, risk, finance, operations, technology and sales, making it relevant to MiM students interested in the commercial and analytical sides of the energy transition.
