Founded in 2010 by Patrick G. Ryan, the founder and former chairman and CEO of Aon, Ryan Specialty is headquartered in Chicago and operates across North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. It has grown through organic expansion and strategic acquisitions.

Ryan Specialty serves insurance brokers, agents and carriers through three main activities: wholesale brokerage, binding authority and underwriting management. Its businesses distribute and underwrite specialty property, casualty, professional, personal-lines and workers’ compensation products, including delegated-authority programs and managing general underwriters.

The firm is especially strong in the excess and surplus lines market, where risks often require specialist underwriting or do not fit standard admitted-market products. In 2024, 78% of the premiums it placed were in the E&S market, and its platform provided access to more than 30,000 retail insurance brokerage firms and over 350 insurance carriers.
