About RWE AG
RWE began as the Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerk, founded as a municipal utility in Essen on 25 April 1898. It has since developed from a German electricity supplier into an international energy group headquartered in Essen.
RWE develops, builds and operates offshore and onshore wind, solar, battery storage and flexible generation assets, alongside hydrogen activities and global energy trading through RWE Supply & Trading. Its renewable portfolio is complemented by gas-fired generation and remaining lignite operations during the transition away from coal.
The firm is especially strong in capital-intensive renewable infrastructure and offshore wind, where it covers project development, construction, operations and maintenance. At the end of 2025, renewables represented RWE's largest capacity category, although the group remained a diversified generator rather than a pure-play renewable company.
