Rathbones traces its origins to a Liverpool timber business established in 1742 and says it had focused entirely on managing clients' wealth by 1912. It is now a UK wealth manager serving private clients, families, charities, trustees and professional partners.

The firm provides discretionary investment management, financial planning and asset management. Its investment teams build diversified portfolios around client objectives, risk profiles and ethical preferences, while financial planners advise on retirement, tax efficiency and intergenerational wealth.

Rathbones is especially strong in UK discretionary wealth management and responsible investment. Its combination with Investec Wealth & Investment UK completed on 21 September 2023, creating what the firm describes as the UK's largest discretionary wealth manager; its 2025 report also records 857 stewardship engagements with companies.
