Petroineos
A PetroChina–INEOS joint venture combining European oil refining with large-scale crude, products and power trading.
Highlights
About Petroineos
Petroineos is a refining and energy-trading joint venture between PetroChina International London and INEOS Group, created in 2011 after PetroChina invested $1 billion in INEOS’s European refining and wholesale business. Its trading platform began full operations in 2012.
The business trades crude, refined products, and power and emissions, while operating the Lavéra refinery in southern France. Grangemouth in Scotland ceased crude refining on April 29, 2025 and transitioned into an import and fuels-distribution terminal, materially reducing refinery employment.
Petroineos is especially strong in physical energy trading and in linking trading activity with refinery procurement, product marketing, storage and logistics. For students, the most relevant opportunities are likely to be in London trading and corporate functions, alongside engineering, operations, commercial and support roles at Lavéra.
