Onyx Capital Group

Onyx was founded in 2016 by Greg Newman and Omar Kayaam as an oil-derivatives trading house. It later expanded into a group covering proprietary trading, market-making, brokerage, advisory, research, data and market-access services.

Its core business is Onyx Commodities, which provides liquidity across crude, refined products and other energy derivatives, with a particular strength in OTC oil swaps and Dated Brent products. The group also operates Flux, an energy data and market-access platform, and The Officials, a price-assessment and market-intelligence business.

For students, Onyx is closer to a specialist trading and market-infrastructure firm than to a conventional investment bank or asset manager. Its differentiator is the combination of trading activity, proprietary market data and technology in relatively opaque energy-derivatives markets.
