About Network Rail

Network Rail was incorporated on 22 March 2002 and is a public sector arm’s-length body of the UK Department for Transport. Its registered office is in London, and it manages railway infrastructure across England, Scotland and Wales.

The organisation owns, operates, maintains and develops track, signalling, bridges, tunnels, viaducts, level crossings and stations. It manages 20 of Britain’s largest stations, while train operating companies run more than 2,500 others.

For students, Network Rail is especially relevant for large-scale asset management, infrastructure investment, operations, engineering, procurement, finance and long-term network planning. Its work combines safety-critical day-to-day railway operations with major renewal and enhancement programmes.
