About National Highways
National Highways was established as Highways England in 2015 and adopted its current name in 2021. It is an arms-length government body that receives strategic direction and funding from the Department for Transport, with its registered office in Birmingham.
The organisation plans, designs, builds, operates and maintains England’s motorways and major A-roads, collectively known as the strategic road network. Its work covers network operations, road safety, asset management, traffic technology, statutory planning and major projects such as route upgrades and new capacity.
Its distinctive strength is the scale and public importance of the infrastructure it manages: a nationwide network carrying more than four million journeys each day and supporting the movement of people and freight. For business students, relevant opportunities span finance and business services, project management, procurement, commercial work, policy, operations and major infrastructure delivery.
