MUFG was inaugurated in October 2005 through the merger of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group and UFJ Holdings, bringing together banking businesses whose roots extend back to the 19th century. It is headquartered in Tokyo and operates through major businesses including MUFG Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities and MUFG Asset Management.

The group provides commercial and corporate banking, investment banking, securities, trust and custody services, asset management, credit cards, consumer finance and leasing. Its strongest differentiator is scale in Japan combined with a large cross-border network, particularly for Japanese corporates and clients active across Asia, the Americas and EMEA.
