MSCI began licensing global equity indexes in 1969, was incorporated in 1998, completed its IPO in 2007 and became fully independent from Morgan Stanley in 2009. Its headquarters are in New York, and it employed 6,268 people across more than 27 countries at December 31, 2025.

The firm provides equity and fixed-income indexes, portfolio construction and risk analytics, sustainability and climate data, real-estate benchmarks, and private-asset data and analytics. Its clients include asset managers and owners, pension funds, banks, insurers, hedge funds, wealth managers, private-market investors and corporates.

MSCI is especially strong in benchmark and index infrastructure: its indexes underpin portfolio construction, performance measurement, ETFs and other index-linked products. It is also expanding its role in private markets and climate analytics, combining proprietary datasets, models and technology for institutional investment workflows.
