Mercer's roots trace to William M. Mercer's post-war pension and group-insurance consulting business; it joined Marsh in 1959. On September 1, 2026, Mercer adopted the Marsh brand and became part of Marsh People and Investments, while retaining its specialist capabilities across people and investments.

The firm advises employers, pension schemes, asset owners and institutions across health and benefits, retirement, investment consulting, workforce transformation, rewards and talent. Its investment business combines manager research, asset allocation, portfolio construction, delegated investment management and outsourced-CIO services.

Mercer's clearest strength is institutional investment consulting: it reports US$16.2 trillion in global assets under advisement and rates more than 11,000 investment strategies. It also has substantial advisory depth in workforce and rewards, where actuarial, data and human-capital expertise are applied to employee benefits, compensation and organisational change.
