About Lloyds Banking Group plc
Lloyds Banking Group was formed in 2009 when Lloyds TSB acquired HBOS during the global financial crisis. Its brands draw on a much longer history: Bank of Scotland dates to 1695, Lloyds Bank to 1765, Scottish Widows to 1815 and Halifax to 1852. The UK government completed the sale of its remaining stake on 17 May 2017.
The group provides retail and commercial banking, mortgages, current accounts, cards, loans, insurance, pensions, investments and corporate banking services. Its main brands include Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows, alongside other businesses serving consumer and commercial customers.
Its strongest position is in UK consumer finance: the group describes itself as the UK’s number-one mortgage lender and reports leading market shares in current accounts, cards, loans and motor finance. For students, it is a large, technology-intensive universal bank with substantial exposure to digital transformation, data, AI, risk, customer operations and financial services products.
