Liberty Global was formed on January 13, 2005 through the combination of Liberty Media International and UnitedGlobalCom. Today it manages two complementary platforms: Liberty Telecom, which operates communications businesses, and Liberty Growth, which invests in technology, media, sports and infrastructure companies.

Its telecom operations are concentrated in four European countries through businesses including Virgin Media O2 in the UK, VodafoneZiggo in the Netherlands, Telenet in Belgium, Virgin Media in Ireland and UPC in Slovakia. The group focuses on converged broadband, mobile, video and fixed-line services, supported by fibre, 5G and other network infrastructure.

Liberty Global is especially relevant for students interested in corporate strategy, telecoms, infrastructure investing, M&A and portfolio management. Its model combines operating businesses with joint ventures and a wider investment portfolio; Sunrise is no longer part of the operating group after being spun off to shareholders in November 2024.
