Founded on October 2, 1962, Jefferies began as an equities trading business and helped develop the U.S. “third market,” enabling institutional investors to trade listed securities over the counter. Its global headquarters are in New York, with additional regional headquarters in London and Hong Kong.

Today, Jefferies combines investment banking, equity and debt capital markets, equities, fixed income, research and strategy, wealth management, and alternative asset management. Its advisory and capital-markets work spans healthcare, industrials, technology, media and telecom, consumer, energy and power, financial institutions, real estate, gaming and lodging, and municipal finance.

The firm is especially strong in financial-sponsor coverage, healthcare, industrials, and leveraged finance. Jefferies states that it works with more than 950 alternative asset managers globally, while its investment-banking platform provides specialized managing-director coverage across 99 industry sectors.
