Greenhill was established in 1996 by Robert F. Greenhill, formerly President of Morgan Stanley and Chairman and CEO of Smith Barney. It initially focused on M&A advisory before adding financing and restructuring advice in 2001 and capital advisory in 2010.

Today, Greenhill operates as Mizuho’s M&A and restructuring advisory business. Its work covers buy-side and sell-side M&A, special committees, shareholder activism and defense, debtor and creditor restructuring, distressed M&A, and private capital advisory.

The firm’s strongest differentiator is specialist strategic advice rather than a broad standalone investment-banking product set. Since Mizuho’s acquisition in November 2023, the franchise has retained the Greenhill brand and advisory focus while gaining access to Mizuho’s financing, capital-markets and wider banking capabilities.
