Highlights
About Direct Line Group
Direct Line began in 1985 as a telephone-based motor insurer created in partnership with the RBS Group. It expanded into home, pet and travel insurance and later became part of a broader UK general-insurance group spanning brands including Direct Line, Churchill, Green Flag, Privilege, Darwin and By Miles.
The group sells motor, home, commercial, landlord and rescue products, mainly in the UK. In 2024 it reported £3,732 million of gross written premium and associated fees, with a 200% solvency capital ratio before the final dividend.
Its strongest market positions are in consumer general insurance: the group reported a top-three position in UK motor and home insurance, number-one position in single-property landlord insurance, and the UK’s third-largest rescue provider. Aviva completed its acquisition of Direct Line on 1 July 2025, so applicants should view current opportunities in the context of an ongoing integration.
