Founded in Hamburg on 26 February 1870 as Commerz- und Disconto-Bank, Commerzbank is now headquartered in Frankfurt am Main and operates as a major German universal bank.

Its two main business areas are Corporate Clients and Private and Small-Business Customers. Services span lending, payments, trade and export finance, capital markets, investment and digital banking, with corporate activities extending across more than 40 countries.

The firm is especially strong in German Mittelstand banking and corporate finance: Commerzbank describes itself as Germany’s leading bank for the Mittelstand and says it handles around 30% of Germany’s foreign trade.
