Chaucer Group

Chaucer traces its origins to 1922, when it was established as a managing agency for Lloyd’s syndicates. It is now part of China Re and operates through both the Lloyd’s market and its company-market platform, including Chaucer Insurance Company in Dublin.

The group provides specialty insurance and reinsurance for complex commercial risks, working with brokers, coverholders and clients internationally. Its underwriting spans areas including marine, energy, property, casualty, aviation, political risks and nuclear insurance.

Chaucer is particularly notable for its underwriting-led model and claims capability. In the 2024 Gracechurch London Claims Monitor, it ranked first of 34 carriers for claims handling, while Lloyd’s Syndicate 1176 ranked second among qualifying syndicates by 2024 combined ratio.
