Canopius

Canopius was formed through a management buyout in December 2003, initially backed by £25 million of equity capital. It has expanded through organic growth and acquisitions and is privately owned with private-equity backing.

The group underwrites specialty insurance and reinsurance through Lloyd’s Syndicate 4444, Canopius US Insurance and Canopius Reinsurance Limited. Its coverage spans property, casualty, marine, energy, cyber, financial lines, accident and health, construction, aviation and other specialty classes.

Canopius is especially strong in specialty underwriting and reinsurance. In 2024, its reinsurance business grew across London, Bermuda, Singapore and Sydney, while Syndicate 4444 reported strong growth in portfolio solutions, property, reinsurance, energy, marine and specie.
