Highlights
About Burford Capital
Founded in 2009, Burford was established to provide permanent-capital financing to businesses and law firms managing the costs and risks of litigation. Its shares began trading on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM market in October 2009, and the company later became dual-listed on the LSE and NYSE.
Burford provides non-recourse capital for litigation and arbitration, including legal-fee financing, portfolio finance, claim monetization, post-settlement finance, and risk-management products. It also manages third-party capital through private funds. The firm focuses on large, complex commercial disputes rather than consumer litigation, with typical investments starting at $5 million.
Its main advantage is scale combined with legal and investment expertise: Burford describes itself as the world’s largest dedicated legal-finance provider by portfolio size. As of fiscal year 2025, it managed a $7.5 billion legal-finance portfolio and had committed more than $12.1 billion to legal-finance assets since inception.
