BTIG was formed in 2005 by combining institutional trading businesses, including Bass Trading; predecessor Bass Trading was established in 2003. In 2026, BTIG was acquired by U.S. Bancorp and continues to operate under its existing leadership and brand.

The firm provides institutional trading, electronic and outsourced trading, investment banking, prime brokerage, capital introduction, corporate access, research, and strategy. Its coverage spans equities, fixed income, derivatives, commodities, foreign exchange, and related products, serving institutional investors and corporate clients.

BTIG is especially strong in high-touch equity execution and client-facing market access, supported by a sizeable sales-and-trading platform, research coverage, and investment-banking activity. For students, it is closer to a diversified institutional brokerage and middle-market capital-markets firm than to a traditional universal bank.
