Founded in New York in 1988 by eight co-founders, BlackRock began as a fixed-income asset manager and developed a technology-led approach to portfolio risk and investment management. It has since grown into a global investment manager serving institutional, intermediary, and individual clients.

BlackRock manages public and private-market strategies across equities, fixed income, alternatives, index funds, mutual funds, and ETFs. Its iShares business is a major ETF platform, while Aladdin provides portfolio-management, risk, analytics, operations, and accounting technology to investment organizations.

The firm is especially strong in scaled index investing, ETFs, fixed income, portfolio construction, and investment technology. Its recent expansion into private markets and data has broadened the platform beyond traditional public-market asset management.
