About Aspen Insurance
Founded in Bermuda in 2002, Aspen became privately owned when Apollo-affiliated funds completed a $2.6 billion acquisition on February 15, 2019. That ownership changed again when Sompo completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Aspen on February 24, 2026, making Aspen part of Sompo’s global property-and-casualty platform.
Aspen underwrites specialty insurance and reinsurance through operations in Bermuda, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with additional branches in Canada, Singapore, and Switzerland. Its insurance portfolio includes casualty, property, cyber, professional lines, credit and political risk, crisis management, marine, energy, and construction; its reinsurance business covers property, casualty, and specialty risks. It also operates through Lloyd’s Syndicate 4711.
The firm is especially strong in complex, bespoke risks and alternative reinsurance capital. Aspen reported more than $4.6 billion in annual gross written premiums in connection with the Sompo transaction, while its Aspen Capital Markets platform had more than $2 billion in assets under management and generated 80% of its 2024 fee income from non-catastrophe, long-tail business.
