Adam Smith Institute

Founded in 1977, the Adam Smith Institute is a London-based, independent, non-profit and non-partisan think tank. It describes its role as practical rather than academic: developing policy ideas, publishing research and influencing public debate and policymakers.

The Institute is strongly associated with free-market and classical-liberal economics. Its early work focused on privatisation, deregulation, tax reform and internal markets in healthcare and education, and it presents itself as a significant contributor to the UK privatisation debates of the 1980s and 1990s.

Today, its work covers areas including housing and planning, energy, business and technology, taxation, public services, welfare and individual freedom. Its internships combine policy research with operational work, including research papers, blogging and office administration.
